So I have not been diagnosed with autism, but the more I learn about it, the more I think I may be autistic. I've always been socially awkward, had trouble making friends, making conversation, that type of thing. I also like (and sometimes need) to do things a certain way and hate unexpected scenarios or changes. I have slight sensory issues, mainly with texture and regarding things like food and clothing. But now there's something else that's crossed my mind. I'm currently out of school and unemployed because both of those situations are way to stressful for me. Back when I was working or in school, I would frequently have panic attacks right before I left the house. I would lock myself in the bathroom, and sit on the floor while crying, hyperventilating, rocking, pulling on my hair, hitting my head against the wall, and feeling like I was going crazy. I always thought that all of this was normal panic attack stuff, but now I'm under the impression that at least some of it is more relevant to autism, especially the rocking, head hitting, and hair pulling. So now I'm questioning if those were actually panic attacks or if they were meltdowns, or both? And another question: Is it worth considering to seek an official diagnosis, what are the pros and cons? Thanks in advance.

I would like to add that a diagnosis can be super expensive and difficult, so it’s really dependent on if the resources it would provide are worth it to you.

It is worth getting a diagnosis. Pros: -getting professional help -allowed to get disability -using disability at work/school -more options open up with diagnosis -service dog Cons: -Never being been as "Normal" -getting bullied -people become hostile -people trying to steal service dog -having people try and trigger an outburst Those are just from my experiences and it may be completely different with you though

Also, forgot to include that I have been diagnosed with ADHD so I do have some signs/symptoms that are shared between autism and ADHD. Besides the ones already mentioned, I fidget/stim a lot, mainly with my hands and feet. I also often find new hobbies and interests and become completely absorbed in them.
