Does anyone get made fun of or ridiculed for having a phobia to vomit? My dad calls me sensitive, and overdramatic because everytime I even look at it, it makes me want to pass out, and cry. Is it okay to make fun of someones phobia?

this always happens to me - i leave the room as i become panicky and everyone tells me i am overdramatic. if people make fun of you just think that they’re not in your position and they don’t feel the same way about your phobia, they don’t understand. and everyone says “but no one likes being sick” but just tell them it is deeper than that.

YES OH MY GOSH YES. I always have to cover my and turn away or close my eyes if someone is vomiting near me, even if it's just in a movie/show. I've got emetophobia and it's awful. My dad also used to constantly make fun of me for it and laugh or say something snarky about it. And it's not only other people vomiting, it's me vomiting as well that I'm terrified of. It makes me worry about how much I can be there for my future kids if/when they're sick. I 100% understand how you feel and if you want to talk my messages are open 💜

@royalty I understand the future kids part. I'm so worried that I won't be able to take care of them if this fear continues, but people have told me that when it's my own children it's different. I don't believe them

@Boat Yes same! My mom always says that she had the same fear I do but it "went away" after she had me and my brother. I call bs.

I get made fun of for it sometimes and I'm scared to tell people because I don't want them you use it against me. One time I was joking around with my dad and he said "all I have to do is start gagging and you'll back off" he said that a couple of times and when I told him it hurt me that he said that, he said he would never actually do it. And no it is NEVER ok to make fun of someone because of their phobia, even if it is funny it's not ok. Especially if it'll bite you in the butt later

nobody has ever been cruel to me about it, but it is usually met with non-understanding and very little empathy. everyone tells me to just do it, i’ll feel better. or to ask me why it scares me so bad, and they don’t have patience with me for very long.

It is never ok to make fun of someone’s phobia, I’m so sorry your dad does that to you. I’m all too familiar with it, I had friends in middle school who’d try to make me watch videos of people throwing up or would try to make me listen to it because they never saw it (emetophobia) as being serious and debilitating as it is
