Postnasal drip is a condition characterized by the passage of excessive mucus from the nose to the throat, causing cough, sore throat and constant need for clearing the throat. This condition may occur during infection causing the flu or a cold, weather changes, when there is dry air, pregnancy, sinus infection, cold weather, eating spicy food and using certain medications.
Symptoms may include feeling the need to clear the throat, cough that worsens at night, nausea, sore throat, scratchy throat and bad breath.
Diagnosis is based upon findings from medical history and physical examination.
Treatment may include pseudoephedrine and antihistamines to decrease congestion, saline nasal sprays to reduce some of the symptoms, sleeping with an elevated head, drinking hot tea or soup and staying hydrated.
