I recently had my yearly performance review at work and I was told that I am going above and beyond at my job /but/ maybe I should make work friends. I found this pretty funny because I was already mimicking what I thought I was supposed to behaviorly by doing things like engaging in small talk when others would speak to me and holding doors for people

Companies realize that since they often don't treat employees the best that they're more likely to stay if they have an emotional attachment to people in the office. Depending on your situation, it could be beneficial to explain that you don't socialize easily (whether that's true or not) and that it's easier for you to put your energy into the work instead of socializing. Then ask if there is specific behavior they want you to address or if there have been any complaints? Idk, that's weird feedback to me.

@Alyss I wouldn't "own up" to the being bad at socializing. If they are trying to get you attatched to your coworkers so you'll stay, they're not going to appreciate you outright saying you won't play the game. I'd just smile, agree, and keep doing what I'm doing. You don't need to justify yourself to people who won't care anyway
