What are some of your triggers?

@newmanwife3 I have a few too, but I think the greatest are lies and loud noises.

Money, cleaning, hot weather, shouting and violence, time management. I might have more, but those are definitely my top 5. They trigger me in different ways and the more triggers at once, the bigger the swing. I watch out for my triggers, especially the ones I can't avoid, so I stay aware of why I may be having a manic, depressive or mixed response. It seems to help manage the intensity and helps me keep my loved ones informed about my mood.

@klazikel money is definitely a trigger lol. Or at least the lack there of. Poverty can bring out the most savage beast. Lol

I do have many of them, mostly really small and subtle thing. Secrets. Yelling. When someone tells me that God loves me/I am a child of God and/or that they’re praying for me. Touching specific parts of my body. Snapping of a belt. Anything to do with peanut butter smell or taste. The sound of closing a door and the click when locking an inside door behind me. And the feeling of being trapped whether it be in a room, a small space, anywhere I don’t have full body motion. The list goes on, but those are my biggest ones/they create the most reaction and trigger not only thoughts but also physical sensations.

@E_belli when I was growing up, I used to get beat pretty good at home. There was a certain stick my mom kept behind the pantry. Every time that door opened it made a clicking sound. It was the only way sometimes to know that I was getting ready to be beaten. It couldn't been 1000 elephants in the house and I would recognize the sound of that door immediately. I used to freeze up, shaking, feeling like I had to pee myself. Seconds later, the flogging would commence. I've forgiven her for the way she used to beat me, but it took years, long after I was grown and gone for me to stop hearing the click of that pantry door and stop freezing to it. Imagine being a 20+ yr old woman, dressed to impress, on a date or out with friends, everyone having a good time and out of nowhere you freeze, shaking for a few seconds and always having to go to the bathroom next. I never explained to anyone what was happening. There were even times I jumped out my sleep as an adult, thinking I heard the door open. That's how it used to happen sometimes. It took me getting into a more abusive domestic relationship for me to stop hearing the click of that door but it was jumping out the pot into the fire. Now I have a whole new set of completely different triggers that are worse.

@Sincerely wow. That's really intense, I'm so sorry you experienced that. That is terrible. I hate how stupid trauma like that can spill over to the rest of your life like that. I have a similar response, not the same of course bc I'm not you. I will wake up from a dead sleep if I hear someone opening or shutting or locking my bedroom door. Similar to you, I knew what was going to happen once that door was locked. My stomach drops every time. I no longer have panic attacks when it happens which is appreciated. I have dealt with a lot of my trauma in some ways, but certain sounds such as this have been triggering for 26 years (I'm 30). I have hope that it will continue to get better. It sucks so much that they can have this effect on us after so long. I'm so sorry for what you went through. I'm glad that sound is easier now than it used to be but I'm so sorry for the reason why. I hope you are out of that situation and have the availability to receive treatment. I hope things get better for you. Always keep fighting!

@E_belli Another one I somehow forgot is fireworks and certain dates/anniversaries of course.

@Winchestergirl28 yeah I don't like being touched unless I okay the contact. Lucky for me, I don't have enough people in my life to have to worry about that. But being a product of rape and molestation, I don't like for people to put their filthy hands on me. They don't care about me, so why touch me?

@Mazzyllene o wow, I can't imagine how I would feel if storms were my trigger, I get my best sleep during storms. I usually don't even know something happened til I wake up and the outside is destroyed. People can never believe it but I sleep through tornadoes, hurricanes, electric thunderstorms, and it's the best sleep I can possibly get. I feel like everything is ok in a storm.... It's so funny how different things can mean different things to different people.

@newmanwife3 and I live near an airport, a train station, and a major highway. I'm always hearing something screaming!! I'll honestly say, with so much noise I've had to learn to ignore some of it so I guess it has helped in a sense, but the sound of a loud muffler still sends me through the roof.

@newmanwife3 my neighbor and I were just discussing this yesterday. His exes mother is living with him and it's very draining his energy.
