What is Bipolar Disorder? Need Help Understanding

I need somebody to explain in the simplest way to explain to me what is bipolar. I thought I understood it, but I'm not sure I really understand. I know there are very different types.

Bipolar is about the various poles of mood. Bi meaning 2. People with bipolar fluctuate heavily between heightened happy states and low depression states. The heightened state though can cause distress as it is unnatural and causes the person to expect these really weird euphoric happiness moments. With medication these tend to go away. But simple form is weird changes in mood between happy and sad stages that are distressing in nature usually.
