I'm looking for advice for washing extremely matted hair. hasn't been washed in months because of severe depression. should it be brushed first? I've heard wetting it and then using a lot of condotioner to comb the mats out might help. should I bother trying to get the mats out before washing it? any advice will be helpful. thanks!

i shaved my head, it reduced how much maintenance i had to do and reduces the feeling of yucky hair. also kept me cooler in the summer.

Put conditioner in your hair, a thick deep conditioner, then leave it in for a few minutes up to 5 minutes. Then just slightly get your hair wet and then take a brush with flexible bristles, I recommend a wet brush, then stay at the bottom and gently work your way up. If you still can't get through your tangles, you can go to a hair dresser, they will do it for you. Good luck!

I would do some research on how they brush out dreadlocks, I know there is a specific technique and products. Might be able to use similar techniques for the matting.

      1) Let it soak in conditioner before even brushing it or touching it. Lots of conditioner! 2) Gently rinse out with warm water 3) Add more conditioner, maybe mix with some coconut oil — DO NOT RINSE :) 4) Gently try to brush in sections from bottom to top
