Using Dark Humor to Cope: Is it Okay?

Does anyone else use dark humor directed at themself to cope only for people to get mad or worried?

Yeah my mom gets so pissed when I make self harm and suicide jokes, especially related to my own experiences. I can't help it - if I don't laugh, I'll cry

Ive lost many friendships to making dark jokes about my conditions. When I was in the hospital half dead from my ed, I texted my friends "if I die, put my ashes in our homophobic teacher's coffee" and I got yelled at bc it wasn't funny joking about almost dying.

I think it's kinda like a combination of making a joke before others can and putting the power in your court as well as desensitizing yourself to the truth ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿค”

yes lol, though I guess I understand the reactions bc its maladaptive to shit on urself even as a joke. as a way to kinda change that behavior, I've been trying to,, sarcastically self-aggrandize,, I guess? like when my stutter gets bad and I'm tripping up on my words I say smthn about how I'm the best public speaker ever and all politicians wish they could be me. and even tho I dont believe it and I still feel stupid, it's made my self esteem a little bit better

Lol I definitely had to learn to stop making certain types of jokes because the expressions on people's faces were different than the humorous reaction I was going for lol
