Uncommon Irrational Fears: What's Yours?

What’s an uncommon irrational fear you guys have? Mine is escalators. It obviously isn’t something that ruins my life or anything but people think it’s very weird haha.

I don’t like people seeing me in front of my house, like anyone passing by in their car, I still suck behind whatever car is in the driveway at the moment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m afraid of receipts. They give me so much anxiety it’s ridiculous. I’ve literally cried in public because of them. I find everything so embarrassing and something about receipts is just awful for me

Mine is needles. Nobody can really find my veins so there’s always so many trials and errors with sticking it into my body and I just hate it. Now I have temporary nerve damage because some nurse stuck a needle in my wrist for a CT scan when he was supposed to do it only in the areas above in my hand.

Bugs. I try to suppress my reactions, but sometimes I scream really loud and I swear it probably sounds like someone is trying to kidnap me. Ants are cool though.

I hate escalators! I used to get made fun for it but they seriously freak me out so fucking much. if you’ve seen Elf, that’s almost like me. I avoid them whenever I can. I would rather be out of breath and take the stairs if it means no escalators for me.

Lilly: I’m not afraid of needles but I had a surgery and the nurse didn’t know what she was doing and kept pulling and moving my IV and it hurt for days. I didn’t get any damage but I’ve been more nervous when I have to get them. I wish they would be as gentle as they could about it

I hate escalators also! Sitting at refld lights gives massive anxiety. Also waiting in lines at the grocery store.

Hey Marina, hope the surgery went well. And yet I really wish too. The same thing happened with me recently. My hands are now bruised because they can’t find veins on me. I wish they were kinder about the situation because they all just looked at me like I was anxious and one of the nurses put her leg on top of my hand with the needle to make sure I was still while she inserted another in my upper arm. I don’t move though, I just get scared

Lilly: I still have small bruises where I had IVs in because they were so rough about it. I used to not be afraid of them but I have been since that incident happened. my last surgery, they got the IV specialists right away and I was so thankful for that. that nurse sounds like she was rough about it 🥺 I just turn away when they do it. I don’t have them as often since majority of my appointments are online 🙌🏼

Helicopters. Specifically police search helicopters. Stems from a childhood experience of witnessing a police chase involving an escaped criminal.

Hey Marina, gosh that sounds so bad I’m really sorry to hear that 😭 I def felt that last part, I always close my eyes because I don’t think I can handle watching them do it. If you don’t mind me asking, did anything happen to you after other than the bruising? I have temporary nerve damage from a nurse who incorrectly put IV contrast dye through my wrist rather than my upper arm so I’ve been trying to find someone with the same problem so I can see if they healed rather than just take the doctor’s word that I’m going to heal.

Lilly: okay so I’m pretty sure I have nerve pain. I don’t know if it’s from the IV or not. I was on some medication for migraines and it gave me so much nerve leg pain that I could hardly walk. I’m still a bit bruised where the IV usually goes, the middle of your arm. I went to the ER for the nerve pain (they think I’m drug seeking so they didn’t do shit.) but they just told me to take strong ibuprofen. my arms and legs have been hurting a lot lately. I look away if they’re putting a needle in my arm and I shut my eyes and expect the pain to come

Oh marina im so sorry to hear that, that’s horrible 🥺 I think our situations are diff but the same if that makes any sense. Not a doctor, but if you think the pain is associated with the bruises then hopefully the pain medicine starts to work at some point 😕 I would personally suggest using heat (you can use ice too, a lot of people recommend that better even but it just depends on how you feel about it) I would also recommend seeing an orthopedic or a specialist for the body part where you feel the most pain so that maybe they can help manage the pain or make it feel like you can at least function. I’m seeing one right now, and he’s sending me to therapy

Calling businesses or people I don't know. I have to gather a lot of courage to make those calls. I don't know where the fear came from, but it's gotten worse over years. I much prefer doing things over text, email or an app, when I can.

Bugs of all kinds (even butterflies☹). I've gone into a panic attack and sobbed hysterically over them before for no legitimate reason. That and surgery/anesthesia, I've never had issues when under anesthesia or during surgical procedures, but it makes me cry when surgery is even mentioned as a potential option.

Drains really freaked me out. They always have. I don’t have any justification for why I’m frayed of them, but I know it’s some thing that people judge me for when they find out about it.

Elevators I’ve seen way too many crash or get stuck in movies

I’m terrified of bugs that are known for eating dead or decaying, like roaches and ants. I think it has something to do with my ocd
