Train Your Own Gluten Detection Dog!

Hi all! I just wanted to let people know that there is a way to detect gluten even if you’re very sensitive! Of course it’s none other than man’s best friend!! I trained my dog, Paisley, to detect gluten! I trained her completely by myself and she’s 100% accurate at detecting 1 part per million at less than a year old. Buying a fully trained gluten detection service dog costs about $10,000 to $20,000. As a college student, I don’t have that kind of money, so I decided to DIY it. The training is fairly simple compared to other service dog types and takes 6-18 months to train. Paisley checks everything I eat and I haven’t gotten glutened since last October! If you’re running out of options (like I was) I really recommend doing it. Plus you get a new best friend! Ask me any questions! :)

      @E11iefant Amazing! My Australian shepherd is 12 years old. I think he is losing his hearing but the nose knows a lot. Since I didn't know about Celiac until a year ago it is probably late to train him to sniff gluten but he does pick up articles I drop on the floor.

      @wasplord I have an Australian shepherd that I started scent training at 10 weeks old. I don’t know how well it would work with older dogs, my guess is that the training process would take a little longer (about 12-18 months)! @kim156 By law, no registration is required!       Wow! Can you train my dog?! Haha. But for real, what Breed do you have? My dog is a chihuahua mix and he’s actually very smart and easily trainable.

      Wow!! That’s amazing. Did you have to register her as a service dog or anything to be able to bring her to the store? This would be so helpful and safe so much trouble. Thank you for sharing!

      @samiiiiiiiii @wasplord I used similar training methods as drug/bomb K9 dogs! I measured the amount of gluten by weight, my mom is a chemistry teacher so I had access to accurate scales. I worked with my pup from 100% wheat/rye/barley flour down to 1ppm all in sealed mason jars. Paisley can detect extremely low levels of gluten through any packaging (including canned foods). I bring her grocery shopping with me and she checks everything before I eat it. She also alerts to my cosmetic/hygiene products. I haven’t gotten glutened in 5 and a half months. my sensitivity & symptoms are very severe, so believe me, I would know if she wasn’t accurate haha.

      To be honest, I am sceptical. How did you train your dog? How did you detect that the dog can meassure that the dog can detect quantities as small as 1 part per million?
