How Often Does Thyroid Cancer Reoccur?

I was first diagnosed in 2018 by a protruding lymph node on the side of my neck. Biopsy came back positive and after scans decided to do a TT and bilateral neck dissection. I have a crazy, scary complication to neck surgeries that we did not discover would continue to happen till after my second neck surgery but it’s called a chyle leak. It’s a different story. But it wasn’t until 2 years, 2021 that they finally discovered I was resistant to RAI and that’s why my marker kept rising, treatments weren’t working and scans were clean. I’m currently still not “cancer free”. I’m being treated at the Mayo Clinic for alternative treatments.

Nodule found in october 2018, thyroid removed February 2019 and I have not yet had a recurrence but I am terrified every time they do an ultrasound. I had a scare a few months after surgery but it turned out inconclusive and was not on the RAI scan a couple months later, so it was probably just an enlarged lymph node due to being sick or something.

Tumor found 1999. That has been the only occurrence but I have other health issues because of no thyroid. It is what it is.

Update. That reminds me My surgery is going to be at the end of April and they are going to take the full thyroid out and lymphnoids

I have had no reoccurrences. Surgery in 1999. Did the Radio Nuclear Tide Ablation. Some radiation therapy. Lee up with ultrasounds of the neck and watching TSH levels and making sure the tissue left is suppressed by medication. I had a full thyroidectomy as well as 30 lymph kids removed. I do struggle with more auto immune issues now that I believe stem from having no thyroid but that is what it is.

My tumor was found in 1997 and a needle biopsy only said it wasn't a goiter. Tumor was not removed until 2007 and found to be cancer. Rest of thyroid and also parathyroid was removed. Have not had any more cancer. But did not get calcium when in prison and caused acute kidney failure and osteoarthritis.

I’m so glad that you are still here and still fighting despite what the doctors said and what you’ve been through and still going through!. I love proving the odds wrong. We’re the ones who are actually going through it. And we are overcomers!

One thing that I think helps and no no scientific proof for it but your attitude is a great help that keeps you going. For example when they first discovered my cancer thyroid that was back in 1970 and I was given six months to live. I’m now 75 going on 76 and still hanging in there and defying what they said. So hang in there lol

I’ve heard that all my life. I see a endocrinologist for unrelated issues and my cardiologist actually found my nodule doing a routine mri of my heart. (That’s why they then did the biopsy of my thyroid) he’s like this ain’t my specialty but it might be good to get it checked out. my endocrinologist was shocked. I’m 30, in besides my odd things I’m in general good health, and my blood tests came back normal from the last visit. She I think was more stunned than me when she told me. I wish you the best with everything that your still dealing with.

I would love to keep in contact with you to see how you’re doing. I’ll tell you one thing they told me that might help you is that most people have ONE episode of thyroid cancer and that’s it. It never reoccurs which I hope is the case for you. I just happen to be one of the unusual ones that get it several times. First time for me.. I’m having my surgery consultation on st. Patrick’s day and before I’m going to get a ultrasound to see if it spread to my lymph nodes but most likely going to get a full thyroidectomy and the radiation stuff you talked about. The last time things were active was 2004 and in 2019 they found bladder cancer now I’m fighting that. I have had a total of 11 active cancer episodes and three different types of cancer.

Yes they Removed the entire thyroid gland and the thyroid cancer had also spread to both lungs so every time the cancer came back it also came back in the lungs. The Treatment I was given was Radioactive iodine and that is a liquid which I had to drink. which the long term side effects was dry mouth and the taste buds are totally screwed up. I have had over 1500 mCi of radioactive iodine and I have been told you’re only allowed to have 500 mCi per lifetime. You know it’s kind of funny in a way because they have the lead aprons on lead gloves and they use long tongs To handle the stuff poured in a cup and handle do you to drink that’s kind of scary.

Mine has reoccurred six times.
