Seeking Advice on Therapy for ADHD

Has anyone had good experiences with therapy or know what a therapist can do for ADHD? I’m really hoping that my new therapist can help me figure out how to do my schoolwork and just function better, but it seems like maybe she wants to focus on my anxiety and depression. But I feel like my anxiety and depression are mostly coming from me not being able to do the things I need to do because of my ADHD. Any tips on how to tell her what I want? I’ve seen her once and I see her again next week.

Yeah I’ll try to tell her that I’d like to focus on ADHD. I only saw her once so I’m still hopeful that she can help with ADHD too. But yeah I might need to switch if she isn’t helping with my daily functions, because that’s what I need help figuring out! Thanks<3

I have trouble with this too, and i was actually misdiagnosed until I was 20. I reccomend if possible finding a therapist who has experience or specializes in ADHD. It can be very unhelpful for non-ADHD folks to get treated with the normal depression/anxiety treatments because they usually don’t work. This is because we dont think of things the same way that others do.

I would be direct and say “I feel as thought my anxiety and depression stem from my ADHD symptoms. I would like to talk about that”. They are there to treat you for whatever you think you need to be treated for. If you feel rude being abrupt, maybe write a little note and give it to her at the beginning of the session for her to read over before y’all start!
