Sumatriptan for Migraines: Experiences and Side Effects

Have any of you tried sumatriptan? If yes, did it work? How long did it take to start working? Did you have any side effects? If so, what side effects did you have? Did you stop taking it for any reason and/or do you recommend something else? My doctor is trying to help my migraine days lessen but I only feel like more of a potato. I want to know if people have a positive experience with this medicine because I’m getting more and more scared after all the side effects and allergic reactions I’ve been getting

Honestly now that I’ve tried both sumatriptan and nurtec I would HIGHLY recommend nurtec

Took it several times but then got switched to nurtec because of new interactions with other switched meds… anyways it worked but I had to make sure I was in bed when I took it. Be aware that the first time you take it you will most likely have a strange feeling in the head as it provides pain relief by constructing blood vessels in the brain. This is what causes most people dizziness, tingling, blurry vision, and for me definitely disassociation. So yeah. It does help and weird affect declines with each use.

i take it but it honestly doesn’t help me if i don’t take it soon enough!😅 it also knocks me out, i have to call out the rest of the day due to it making me super sleepy

Sumatriptan for me doesn’t work as well as everyone here is describing. I’m starting to think it didn’t work at all as I would have to sleep for around 6 hours to wake up and still be in a bit of pain. I’ve been on sumatriptan since I was like 10 or so

Sumatriptan made the back of my neck numb and made me feel very stressed out but that’s just for me, testing it out might be a good thing

Sumatriptan did not work at all for me. Made me very dizzy and felt like i was gonna pass out. Im now worried to try other triptans….

I just started using sumatriptan because Advil wasn’t strong enough anymore. It’s been a miracle drug for me. It knocks out a persistent migraine in about an hour. If I take half a pill, the main side effect is drowsiness. If I take a whole pill, I usually fall asleep, get hot flashes, and one time, shortness of breath. Thankfully, half a pill is enough to knock out a migraine for me though.

CherryBunny, I’ll take drowsiness! I’m tired all the time any way. I’ll make a note of that! Thank you ❤️

MayMay, I don’t know what cupping is and I can’t afford massages or a massage gun otherwise I would :/. I do love CBD products though!

Yes! I have sumatriptan for my abortive medication paired with ketorolac which is a good combo for me! I’ve never had side effects - other than drowsy or tiredness - or an allergic reaction. And I’ve used it in both injection and oral form

No problem have you tried holistic medicine? Cupping and massages have helped me relieve some pain as well. Oh and CBD rubs.

Are you using it as preventative or abortive? I used it for abortive but it only worked when paired with Benadryl for me. I didn’t notice many side effects but it did not work well enough for me to continue using it.
