I see old habits creeping into my daily routines. I know I’m starting to hit a downward spiral. Do I accept my feelings and treat myself gently, and with love for a few days? Or do I fight it, to maintain the good habits and routines I’ve worked so hard to rebuild?

I always recommend treating yourself gently and with love and compassion, regardless of what’s going on in your life. Not everything has to be either/or, black/white. Sometimes we have bad days and it doesn’t mean you’re failing or that you suck at life, or whatever your brain is telling you right now. I know how discouraging it is to feel like you’re messing up the progress you’ve made, but the negative doesn’t discount the positive. It can’t be erased that easily. Unfortunately recovery isn’t usually a straight line, ups and downs happen to everyone. Try not to beat yourself up during this time and treat yourself the way you would a good friend. If you can’t do all your good habits today, try for just one, or even part of one. It will feel less overwhelming and more doable. You don’t have to do it all every day and it’s ok to take time to rest. Some days you can do more and some days you can only survive. You are not alone in feeling like this.
