Struggling with Hearing Difficulties: Seeking Answers

I have struggled with my hearing since sustaining multiple head traumas as a child, but recently had a hearing test and was told the audiologist couldn't see any problems with the results. she recommended speaking to my doctor about auditory processing disorder, but said that wouldn't account for my difficulty when there's no background noise, or explain why one ear is so much worse than the other. what could be the problem?
