Struggling with Explaining My Mistakes

Sometimes I make mistakes.. like forgetting to do something as simple as turning a light off when I leave a room. When I get reminded t do it.. I feel the need to say "Oh I probably was thinking about something or talking to someone" but then I get told not to give excuses. I'm not trying to make excuses. I have ADHD I'm just trying to explain that it was an accident. It makes me upset that I can't explain why I might have missed something.

I completely understand, I personally never understand what NT people mean by "excuses". When I'm asked why I did/didn't do something, and I give a reason as to why, I'm almost always met with "I didn't ask for an Excuse, I asked for a reason why". That has always confused me and now i feel like I have to overexplain or justify myself. It can be confusing and draining sometimes
