How to Stop Pushing People Away and Make Real Connections

How do I stop pushing people away? I feel so lonely, but it’s my own fault because anytime I meet someone worthwhile, I ignore them for weeks until I feel like I don’t have a right to ask for their friendship anymore. I recently did this with a new potential friend, and I’m terrified I’ll do it to my new girlfriend too…

Hi friend, depression is hard. The consequences of a depressive period are even harder. The way that it worked for me was by being honest with people I love. You just tell them that sometimes you don't have energy to even exist - they will be confused at first but if they care about you, they will understand. Once you establish that level of understanding, just reach out to them and do an activity that doesn't require you to "put a show." Watch a movie together or go to a stand-up comedy show - you don't have to talk, but the proximity will be comforting. You might end up with a lot less friends, but at least you won't spend so much time and energy masking your depression
