I had a spinal fusion about 5 months ago and ever since then a relatively big portion of my back has been numb and sometimes I get weird stabbing sensations in the same area that last a few seconds. Is this normal? I thought it was maybe the nerves being damaged or something but it's lasted a while.

I don't know if it's normal for everyone, but it was for me. I had my surgery 13 years ago. Eventually, some of the numbness goes away, but it there will always be some numbness. I think the skin itself (the nerves there will heal), but they probably cut through a few nerves when they opened you up, and you may never have full feeling back. My numbness is on the actual scar (under the skin and its nerves), fanned out near the base of my scar, and were my drainage tube was.

One of the replies in a similar context mentioned, "I've been to the doctor MANY times post surgery and they all say this is NOT normal." However, it's important to consult with your own doctor regarding your specific symptoms and concerns, as individual experiences may vary.
