Seeking Urgent Help for Suicidal Thoughts: Alternatives to the ER?

What should I do if I’m suicidal and I’m not comfortable going to the ER? I’ve tried hotlines before and they never seem to help me. I’ve had two experiences in the ER before for being suicidal and both were very traumatic and did nothing to help. I need urgent help but I can’t find it. Is there somewhere I could go instead of the ER?

Were the first two ER experiences in the same ER? Don't be afraid to try a different one. I've been in and out of ERs and psych wards countless (like 100+) times. Yes, some... unfortunately a lot... suck. They're understaffed, micromanaged, and the nurses and assistants are overworked and sometimes even put in dangerous situations. I get it. But they're not all bad. You never know. The next ER you visit may be that diamond in the rough, so to speak. If you really, REALLY don't want to go to the ER, but you don't want to talk to someone on a hotline, try confiding in someone you not only trust, but also look up to. Ask their opinion. They may tell you exactly how much you mean to them, and how awful life would be without you. Also, if you're more comfortable with texting, and you live in the United States, you can text both 988 or 741741. Good luck. And look into getting some serious therapy. I've been in therapy for 20+ years. It really helps me process the parts of life that I simply can't deal with on my own.
