Scared of being dependent on medication for OCD

So I recently was referred to a psychiatrist for OCD and I’m scared all they’re going to do is get me dependent on a medication and focus less on the therapeutic part. Sometimes I debate if it’s worth it. I’m a health major so I’m aware of the fact Dr’s hand out prescriptions like candy these days. Any advice?

Well, a psychiatrist is not going to work on the therapeutic part no matter what. A therapist or psychologist will do that with you. That requires your action. A psychiatrist is not going to put you on medication if you don’t want to. Psychiatrists don’t just throw out medication to people and they certainly don’t do that anymore with benzodiazepines. I understand you’re a health major but are you also a mental health major? Psychiatrists will prescribe an SSRI possibility depending on your severity of OCD for YOUR well-being not to get you ‘hooked’ on an SSRI (which isn’t addictive) meanwhile you and your therapist can work through the issues and help get you on track to weaning off the SSRI. They’re doing it to help you not to trick you. If you don’t want help don’t get it. But why live your life miserable with OCD if there are safe solutions?

you’re right, I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about people who become too dependent on the medications and their therapists don’t seem to help as much. But yeah it’s probably better to get help than not 🤷🏻‍♂️
