Debilitating Dental Pain: How to Cope?

How do on you deal with the pain? I started having extremely debilitating pain in my teeth and jaw a few months. Dentist kept trying to find reasons with my teeth even though they couldn’t see any reason for it but none of them were why I was getting it. I’ve been referred to maxillofacial doctor but there’s a long waiting list. And in the meantime, I’m on a very high dosage of cocodamol but most the time it barely helps and I’m struggling to get though the days.

Hey Brain, I take a bunch of meds. It's so hard dentists aren't "experts" in TMJ except for splint therapy. I am actually going to Indiana and Kentucky in a few months to see 2 prominent Specialists in TMJ pain. I can tell you more if you'd like!

I have severe tooth, jaw, and face pain. It's undiagnosed as my dentist cannot find anything wrong, all I know is it flares when PEM is bad so I know it's ME related somehow. I do have TMJ as well, but it is mild and definitely not bad enough to cause this pain, just coexists with it.

yup it coexists with a lot of my issues too! It sucks it's such a major joint and surgery is the last on my list. I'm not giving up trying to get treatments.

Do you clench your teeth or grind them? I've had same pain, been to the GP, maxillofacial etc. I've recently started massaging my cheeks and jaw with oil and guasha and omg what a difference. Good luck x

I was originally given a bite razor for nighttime for possible teeth grinding to see if that helped put the pressure from it brought on my tgn pain. But I do clench and have been given techniques to help from physio.

I have this pain and was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. I’m on a combination medication approach using Gabapen and Vimpat for it. It’s worked great. Also making my diet less inflammatory seems to have helped too - I already do no gluten but I also reduced the amount of dairy and red meat I eat.

so I was eventually diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. But the run around of it. I was sent to maxillofacial and the doc didn’t think it was but sent me for an MRI which didn’t show anything. Then saw him again and sent me to a pain clinic which I still haven’t been to. My mum ended up just asking the gp to try me on carbamazepine in the mean time cause on the pain. In the mean time a coouple months ago I saw a gp at a clinic who said it was tgn based on what I had described and don’t know why I was sent to other places. He upped my dose of tegretol and now the pain is way more deal-able.

I had that. Initially, the dentist found a small gap under my crown. So slight amount of air was making it under. He filled it. We should have stopped there. It was about 30% better. Knowing what i know now, it probably was 100% fixed but my overexcited nerves didnt know. We ended up replacing the crown. Now with no doubt that it was foxed. My body still vomplained bery skmilar for about 3 more months. Next occurrence (different tooth), the dentist didnt find any issue, so ignored it. Symptoms faded away in about 2 months. Nowadays if i have issues, i can tame most by using Peridex, antiseptic mouthwash. Sometimes that doesnt work.

yeh I went to the dentist about half dozen times in about 4-6 weeks. Fortunately in trying to find out the reason for the pain they discovered I needed two fillings and had a dead tooth - that they thought definitely could have been the cause but the gauze for the bleeding brought it back.

Tmj usually a jaw split I was given jaw exercises because of underlying conditions, cut back on caffeine, eat softer food, no popcorn, don't chew gum. That's what I suggest from the packet I got for tmj.

I was also sent to physio about general jaw pain which has been diagnosed as tmj issues. So because of that and the trigeminal neuralgia I’ve have to cut out hard and chewy foods as well.
