I’m diagnosed Major Depressive and ADHD, however I am also a psych student taking abnormal psych this semester. We’re currently learning about bipolar disorders and I actually had to research it thoroughly for a presentation and a research paper. My dad has bipolar 1 and I’m seeing a lot of similarities between him and myself as well as the symptoms of bipolar 2 I feel I may have been misdiagnosed MDD and idk what to do.

I will say, it’s very common for people to think they have a disorder when studying and researching it. That happens to med students sometimes. But I don’t want to invalidate your thoughts either, because it could very well be true. I was diagnosed with MDD and then that was changed to Bipolar later on. Here’s why: I didn’t start exhibiting hypomanic symptoms until I was 23 or 24 (I’m 25). But apparently if you have early onset depression (depression in adolescence) there is a higher chance you of have bipolar (doesn’t mean everyone experiencing that in adolescence is bipolar, just a high percentage). I would discuss it with your provider (I might leave out the bipolar project part, as they may take you less seriously). You can share that your dad has bipolar 1 and what your hypomanic symptoms are and duration (I am assuming you are having hypomania as you said bipolar 2).

I was diagnosed with bipolar type 2 when I went to the hospital. They asked me a serious of questions. And I got diagnosed with borderline personality disorder as well from trauma.
