Just realised I don't know how or what to prepare for an autism assessment. I've seen people go with loads of paperwork, so what do I need to do and take with me?

I didn't take anything. I don't have examples from my childhood since I have dissociative amnesia for the first 11 years of my life, and I don't talk to my family. But they'll ask you about what you're symptoms are now and what they were like as a child. They should give you really long bubble tests to weed out the possibility that you're faking (the questions get slightly different but repetitive, so they wanna make sure you're not just memorizing the symptoms list). But I didn't bring anything with. Some people have more proof because they've been collecting it so they can convince someone, but it's not necessarily required. I think it's just for their own peace of mind and a reaction to their frustration. The important part is to be as honest as you can with your answers. Even if you don't get labeled as on the spectrum, they might find something else, so being honest (even about stuff you may not want to admit in the testing) can lead to answers.

"Be honest about your experiences and be open-minded. Expect to answer questions and talk about personal things. Some assessments may involve practical tests such as telling a story from a picture book or being shown photos of people and being asked what you think they are thinking. You can also prepare by taking online tests like the RAADS-R test. It's also recommended to ask parents about any developmental delays they may have noticed when you were younger."
