Happy Independence Day! How do you develop personal health independence?

@Purplefilth Now, was it difficult and painful? Yes. But I am better now.

Personal health independence? Learned that doctors are actually really dumb and forfeited the idea that I โ€œneededโ€ their opinion. After years of anecdotal experiments I found out how to better utilize my body to do what I need to to make money and feel liberated.

Good medicine that works, good regimen re: therapies. Good sense of humor Lithium is really helping me with all this.

Letting myself finally be what I feel is right..... At 26

    • Dayze

      629d

I'm trying to do it by cutting out family, going to therapy, getting back on my meds, getting back into art, and my favorite one self help book reading.

    • Soskae

By finding a doctor who will help and give me resources instead of expecting me to find everything out by myself.

Currently by protesting and fighting the government for my freedoms back.

      • Soskae

        629d

@Snowdrift the gov doesnโ€™t realize it ends up taking away everyoneโ€™s liberty by depriving women of this one.

By first recognizing Iโ€™m who I am and really loving myself first no matter where I am. Then taking one step towards improving.

I make sure to let people around me know of what I need, and how I work without shame. And constantly stand up for myself and my needs.

Getting the help I needed that I couldn't when I was under my parents. I finally got a sleep doctor after complaining about being tired for 6 years and my aunt saying I might have hypersomnia like her.

Still doing things that interest me despite my health situation! Finding out ways to still be able to do what I want and not have to constantly deal with doctors because of it

    • old_trout

      647d

I advise my fellow people in other media groups (recovery and dual diagnosis) treat yourself to something every now and then, if and when you can. One shouldn't have to suffer, especially while in recovery. I'm always in a good mood, when I leave a fast food place, with something that's horrible for me!!

    • Boofer

      647d

By reminding myself that it's my life and no one else's. If life really is a gift, it should be enjoyed. No one else is going to do that for me.

I tried to keep my mind happy on the happy stuff instead. I was kinda upset. Even though it's my first birthday without my dad being there. He's busy getting fixed in a neighboring town. It's a lot to take in and handle.

Journaling is a great way for me to organize my ever racing mind. It helps me tremendously to process big emotions but also to keep up with the things I learn about myself, my symptoms and the tools and strategies that work well for me to get through each day.

Have serious conversations with my doctor's. If they mention a med, I ask why. Ask if there are alternatives first. I don't just do what I'm told, I listen and learn.

    • BrandonSay

      649d

I'm just happy that one major thing for me is that it's extremely difficult for me to get stressed out or angry at all and I hope that makes it very beneficial to my epilepsy and has reduced a lot of big chances for major seizures. I really hope never to wake up in an ICU again after a seizure almost completely disoriented, intubated and looking to find a surprise PICC line in my arm and a catheter in me again

      • Helgy

        649d

@BrandonSay I feel bad you had to go through that I hope you are doing better I was in the ICU back in 2006 so have been working with a therapist to help me with my PTSD and I too hope to not have to go through that again. I donโ€™t wish that upon anyone

    • BrandonSay

I have to take it easy with my body every day, no alcohol, definitely no hard drugs just whatever anti-epileptic drugs I get prescribed and EATING is a top priority for my body. I've also recently started trying to lightly work back into a good exercise routine as I'm told this can also be very beneficial to epilepsy as long as I'm not overdoing it

      • BrandonSay

        649d

@BrandonSay Other than that I'm getting closer to a big surgery date for my epilepsy to get an RNS device implanted which both my neurologist and I are very hopeful for the endgame of this being a full recovery from my epilepsy
