Are there any treatments for PCOS that aren't birth control? My doctor instead this is the only treatment but I don't feel comfortable taking birth control if I don't need it.

Yes! Metformin definitely helps balance insulin resistance for PCOS. I take it and It helped me lose weight. Don't forget to stay active, it will help reduce the symptoms as well. In addition, I do acupuncture once a week for another physical condition but I was amazed to find out that it actually improves hormonal balance.
I was told by my ob/gyn Metformin doesn't actually help with PCOS it helps regulate ovulation cycles in women with PCOS so they can try to get pregnant. I don't recommend metformin unless thats your goal. Birth control is pretty much it, but it really does help a lot. My periods are actually a thing now and they stopped cramping. Plus my skin cleared up and a few other things
I know metformin is also used for PCOS (It's also used in people with diabetes) my doctor reccomended that for me one time but it wasn't right for me.
