Parents not taking ADHD seriously

Does anyone else’s parents treat them like they use their adhd as an excuse? I was newly diagnosed at 23 years old and have been coming to a lot of realizations but when I try to explain them to my parents they brush it off and don’t understand the severity of them. How do I get them to take it seriously?

When I mentioned to my mom I might have adhd she got very emotional and said it was "another thing she missed" and that "she screwed up as a mom" so that's where that conversation went. I'll talk about it again when she's in a better place mentally.

I agree when I first got diagnosed I tried to explain to my mother and dad that some of the stuff I do I can’t control but I do apologize for because I know it’s inconvenient for them, they told me that it’s not an excuse just because it’s true and that I’ll grow out of it anyways

I’m 39 I have ADD I had my most recent shunt surgery near the end of February so I’m still recovering from it. I’ve noticed since I had the most recent surgery that I’ve had a hard time distinguishing the taste of anything I drink or eat. I just started getting my taste back this week that things are starting to taste how they are supposed to. I’ve also noticed since the surgery that I get bad muscle spasms that make my arms or legs just Jump for no reason it is a real pain during the day I can try and control it but lately it’s been really bad at night when I’m laying in bed trying to sleep. It was so bad 2 nights ago I almost fell out of my bed. If anyone has any nice suggestions I would appreciate it please and thanks.

i know how you feel, my dad gaslit me into feeling like my adhd was my fault and i chose to fall behind in school and spend my money impulsively , id say stand your ground, you know you best. be you, dont let people tell you things about yourself that they know nothing about

There’s a great website called additude.com that’s all about ADD/ADHD - they might have resources for explaining to your parents or resources you can direct them to so they can see that it’s real and really affects you
