Negative Emotional Effects of Hormonal Birth Control

I think I finally realized that hormonal birth control has had a huge negative effect on me emotionally since I started it. What I notice now is that having taken a break in between trying new birth control pills, I feel so much better mentally. Physically, it’s hell because of the pain and bleeding, which has some effect on my mental health. But I feel a lot more clear-headed, emotionally available, and less just angry all the time. Has anyone else noticed this? What have you tried for contraception when hormones just seem to exacerbate symptoms? What makes a difference in your cycles—in terms of pain, and/or mental health?

Hi MatchaBunn, I feel for you! For some women hormonal birth control is hideous - it was for me! I had such a bad time with it that I eventually dropped everything and just asked to have a copper coil fitted for contraception. I was warned that coils could make my heavy, painful periods more so, but was surprised to find it did the reverse. If a coil doesn't suit, you could try oestrogen patches with progesterone pessary: because they are delivered very close to source, the dose is smaller and has less effect on your body overall. I found that was a good option when I needed hormone treatment to help manage other menstrual related symptoms and had far fewer side effects than any other method.
