How do I get my mom to understand my antidepressant use?

My mom recently found out that I’m on antidepressants. I’m 22 years old so it’s really none of her business but she found out by going through my trash and finding the prescriptions. She told me that the medication I’m taking is just a “bandaid.” She’s a nurse who’s anti-medication. I’m just really struggling to be happy recently and this hasn’t helped. Any tips for getting people to understand my perspective as the person who has been helped by these medications?

When my mother found out I take Xanax she demanded an explanation and calls them crazy pills. She’s the reason I take them. I’m 61

I wanted to say bad words when I read this but I'm trying to be polite, in regards to your mom telling you medication is a band-aid... and she's a nurse. Just wtf. I'm sorry you are dealing with that.😞 You're not alone. Stay strong 💪, in the midst of those around you not knowing any better, being unsupportive, or having weird ideas. ❤️👍Sometimes those people will come around eventually. It can be exhausting being the educator to your disorder but hang in there. You are beautifully human. 🙂

Depression is more than being in a bad mood or being sad, it's a chemical imbalance and an actual illness. Saying that to you would be similar to telling a cancer patient that their chemotherapy pills are just a "bandaid" and won't solve their problems, your issues are completely valid. I had a similar issue when living with my mother, she would always say that medications shut down part of your brain and turn you into a numb, mindless robot. Some people will only ever understand what they want to, and won't put in the effort to learn that what they might disagree with may be helping others.

Ppl are only going to understand what they want to. You said that you’re and adult and it’s none of her business, and it’s not. If I was in the situation I would confront her about going through my things. But I’m not in the situation so it’s your decision.

As a nurse who is on antidepressants don’t listen to her. Depression is more than just a feeling. It’s a chemical imbalance in the brain. The meds help your body properly make the correct level of chemicals. If your mom, who should be educated on this, doesn’t think it works she probably never will. I think it’s easier to just ignore her and do what you have to to block it out. Remember you come first in your own life. Take care of your health before the opinions of others.

At the end of the day you can’t help the ignorant, you can only pray for them, what i’m trying to say is that people don’t necessarily have to understand it, they just have to respect it as it’s a personal choice you made because you were looking after your well-being which is completely valid! I understand she’s your mom, but if she really can’t understand that you’re sick and need medicine, you don’t owe her any of your time or explanations
