my mom thinks there's absolutely no way i have autism. she thinks that i'm just seeing little things i relate to, obsess, and then convince myself i have autism. she said i can't get tested as well so i dont know what to do is that possible? what if i'm faking? how can i figure it out?

I was self diagnosed for years before professional diagnosis- if you feel like you relate to autistic struggles and that the autistic community can help you in my eyes you are autistic. Autism isn't a disease or a disorder that really has any significant medical intervention besides therapy, self diagnosing, and even potentially being wrong with self diagnosing isn't harmful in the slightest. If you think you're autistic then you're autistic and I welcome you to our community

My mom has a lot of friends whose kids are autistic so when I was diagnosed with autism, she didn’t believe it because I didn’t act like her friends kids. She always thought of autism as an extremely debilitating mental illness, so since I can talk and drive a car, she never thought I had it. She has sort of accepted it after talking about it to my therapist and learning more about the spectrum.

this happened to me for a while with my mom, there was a sort of stage of grief or denial for her. she is fully accepting now. plus, if you were faking it, what would you even gain? it is obviously causing you distress so i highly doubt you would fake something like that !! I'm here to talk if you need me .

this is pretty common sadly. if you are of age you Can get tested. if you can make an appt and get there when she doesnt know about it or just tell her you are going to anyway as it is your right.

I definitely can relate.. I told my Aunt and Uncle that my son and I most likely have autism because we exhibit so many clear symptoms. My therapist said that I most likely am as well and I told him that.. he told me not to listen to my therapist because she doesn’t know what I’m talking about 😔
