Misdiagnosed with Bipolar Disorder: What to Do?

My PCP brought up the fact that I could be misdiagnosed and might have bipolar disorder. Has anyone else been misdiagnosed? How did your doctors handle it? How did you handle it? Did your treatment plan change? How long did it take for a correct diagnosis?

This information makes me feel so much better. I'm glad to know I'm not alone. I talked to my psychiatrist today. We changed some of my medications, and she went over my profile in detail. She doesn't think I have bipolar. Just a lot of low lows, so when I get in a good place (normal) it seems off to me. She's also going to have my therapist determine if I have ADHD. A lot going on. :)

When I was 4 years old I was misdiagnosed with sensory issues. It took 15 years to get rediagnosed with high functioning Autism. My doctor was surprised on how I went so long without being diagnosed correctly. My treatment plan didn't change. When I got rediagnosed I felt relieved, I had been trying to tell my parents and doctor for years. But they didn't listen. Then my therapist noticed that I was showing signs of high functioning Autism. Without his help I would have never gotten the correct diagnoses.
