Dealing with Mental Health Stigma in the Family

any one here part of a community where mental health is a very taboo subject? no one talks about mental health in my family, though every one of us is dealing with mental health challenges (anxiety, depression, addictions). it’s really challenging to suffer in silence and to see family members suffer silently too. when mental health is brought up in our household, my sibling and I are generally told what we need is a mindset shift to focus on the positives in our life. just wondering if any one here has a similar experience and how you did/are navigating that.

Yes definitely. Mental health isn’t even a topic in my family. Part of my mom’s side of the family don’t even believe in vaccines. I see my brothers struggling with anxiety and skin picking (like me) but nothing is said. My grandma, mom, and others ridicule us for having such a “disgusting habit”. It’s clearly more than that. Anyways, I haven’t done anything to alleviate the problem, but I know that I could be the one to change things through communication and helping myself. I hope you can work things out
