Drinking ice cold water or holding an ice pack to my chest helps significantly. A lot of the typical self-care advice I see just doesnā€™t work on my severe anxiety. Are using tips from the poly vagal theory to restart my nervous system is definitely what Iā€™d recommend

Breathe, grounding, and if itā€™s an 11 on a 1-10 scale then I go to my meds.

Whenever my nerves get too bad I smoke a cigarette. I'm not a smoker but it does help.

Play an intense, immediately rewarding game and listen to songs that make my adhd vibe. I expend a lot of energy that way and I get my dopamine fix which usually helps the anxiety melt.

Cry, be irritable, and avoid things by watching TV. Itā€™s not the Healy response, but itā€™s what I do

I cry that's when it comes on out of no where. I'm not sure why it happens.

Schedule a time to face what youā€™re anxious about later, then ideally I go make and drink a cup of tea. Or furiously write down my anxiety thoughts. Or pace around or sprint somewhere. Or go hide under the bed or in a closet. Honestly thereā€™s so many different kinds of anxiety!

(Sometimes) exercise helps. And I'm not talking about like 15 crunches or whatever. If it's available to you that you have some walking path like a park or safe streets in your neighborhood to let that trapped energy out it's a good idea to walk or jog for 30 minutes. Or anything that makes you feel productive. When I didn't have a walking path to me, my anxiety and depression would build up so I would anxiety clean my house. It used up that energy into something productive and made me feel like I have more self worth. I'm not sure what activity that would be for you as an individual but keep it to something realistic. If you set high goals that you can't achieve in one day like finishing a novel then it may backfire on your mentality. Its always a mental battle to get better.

It's funny for me, I listen to Bo Burnham Inside! It calms me down! Also if you have any pets, play with them! And don't forget to breath! 4 seconds in, 6-8 seconds out! It helps me personally!
