Managing expectations on ADHD medication

Just started taking Dextroamphetamine-Amphetamine for ADHD. I like it so far, but I am afraid the effects will subside over time. I also find that I have high expectations of the medication and myself, how do you manage that?

Tru headspace for sleep. It has helped me a ton. Sleepcasts help me a ton

I take Adderall and it is sometimes really hard for me to sleep, but I have to make sure that so take it early enough in the day and if I’m not tired at bed time then I know that I need to take some melatonin. I only take 3mg or 5mg melatonin and that helps me feel tired enough to get ready for bed.

Hello! I am late to this party. But is there a difference between Vyvanse and Dextroamphetamine-Amphetamine? I thought it was just the generic? I didn't sleep AT ALL last night, maybe 2 hours. It was my first night on Vyvanse, is the generic less intense?

Take a look at yourself as a plate with all these different ingredients and colors. When you add expectations you put your plate on a pedestal, maybe expecting it to glow (in a sense). Try not to have expectation but rather take a day by day evaluation, then whatever the outcome, your plate has been cleaned (good side effects) or it hasn't and you have to change it up a bit to make it work for you. Otherwise you get stuck with frustration cause you're not getting what you thought you might or wanted.

@hopscotch, found that I am sleeping earlier and better on dextroamphetamine. Prior to this I tried Vyvanse and sleep was significantly impaired, as was mood. Maybe there’s a better fit for you? Or it could be dosage

For sure Hopscotch! Just do it with your doctor. I actually take my ADHD meds on and of depending on my needs that day, but I had the issues when I was off for around 4+ days. It’s just something that is apparently relatively common and not well known.

BumbleBree, that may be true for you, but it’s good to take breaks from meds every now and then, especially like adderall and substitutes for it since it’s addictive and you can build a tolerance for it if you take it daily.

I feel like I sleep SO much better when I don’t take my meds. They can interfere with sleep a lot, so I recommend taking them earlier than later so they have time to wear off!

Oh thanks for letting me know. I am trying to stay regular but sometimes I get less sleep than I hope for so I prefer not to take meds the next day.

I also started ADHD meds recently and I am in the same boat. Oh! Did you know if you discontinue them suddenly for more than a day or two it can give you really bad panic attacks? I figured it out the hard way, just a heads up.
