Managing Diabetes Burnout with Mental Health Issues

As a type one diabetic with mental health issues, diabetes burnout has been a huge problem when managing my sugars. I’ve gone into DKA 4 times in the last year because my mental health makes me less motivated to take care of myself. Does anyone else have this problem? How do you overcome it?

I have a lot of mental health issues and all of them mess with diabetes management.

I don’t have any good advice, but I feel you and I’ve been struggling with this, too. I think COVID made it even worse—it’s an extra layer of isolation for us. Even my parents and my partner can’t fully understand what it’s like. I started taking antidepressants last year, and it’s helped some. I don’t feel terrific about needing them, though.

I feel you. My mental health condition causes me to not want to check my blood sugar because I’m afraid of knowing what it is.

I have it too. Sugar makes me feel better, but not for long. Headaches, high blood pressure and rapid heartbeat along with depression sucks. I go for a walk.

I have this problem. I explained to my spouse that I needed extra help with how much pressure taking care of my diabetes is. This could be any person in your support system. My therapist has mentioned grief therapy surprisingly for the sad feelings I have with everything that’s different and missing from my life. You could also try to set alarms for sugar checks, place sticky note reminders, or whenever you really don’t want to check just try to remember that it is unfair but you can still live an amazing life 💕 I know how you feel and you’re not alone
