Help with Echolalia in ASD

Okay so I have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). The last few days I’ve been doing this clicking noise with my mouth. And it’s technically called echolalia. It’s very common with ASD, ADHD, Seizures. Which I have all 3 of those conditions. I’ve never have done this particular noise and it’s driving me up a wall. Like really bugging me. So it’s definitely not stimming cause stimming would be something that helps overstimulation. And this is making me more overstimulated and overwhelmed. I’ve had no changes to medication. Nothing that would necessarily “CAUSE” it to occur. I notice it gets worse when I am very emotional. Having intense emotions. I’ve also been in a LOW with my bipolar II so had lots of intense emotions and having some Financial struggles so definitely overwhelmed anxious and stressed about that so idk. I do know I recently switched my nutrition for my PEG tube (I have a feeding tube in my tummy) but I don’t think that would cause this. It’s the same brand just a different kind it’s special to be easily digest. But it could be as simple as the fact that I’m gaining weight now, getting used to my PEG tube and the schedule changes because of that and I am now on pump feeds 16 hours a day which is crazy! I think that’s more likely it before my nutrition switch. But the main reason I’m starting the conversation is to know what helps? I’ve never had a stimming type of behavior that has annoyed the living heck outta me. Is there anything that could make it any better? I plan on mentioning it to my therapist on Wednesday and my psychiatrist on June 1st but gotta figure something out to at least help the situation before then. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :)

It’s only Stimming if it’s voluntary. If these are involuntary than they are probably tics (which would be a part of a tic disorder). If they are voluntary but you have to do it (bc an intrusive thought is threatening you. Ex. Clap 3 times or your dog dies) that’s an ODC compulsion. I would be interested for you to describe this more, but it does NOT sound like a stim.

I have a few really long phrasal stims that annoy and distress me. I keep track of my positive stim phrases? Then, when a bad stim hits I just do one of my good stims and sort of overwrite the bad ones. It usually helps to phase the bad stim out. Idk if that will help in this case but I hope you feel better!

thank you. I didn’t even think to try doing a stim that makes me feel better I’ve tried so many other things from DBT Skills to sensory toys but never thought to do more stimming. Genius! And thank you. Hopefully it works. I took my anxiety meds and insomnia meds already so I’ll fall asleep here eventually so I’ll try it tmr if my annoying clicking happens. Thank you so much!!!!!
