Late Diagnosis of Neurodivergence: What Was Your Experience?

I been on the waiting list for while, though have been moved to the adults list as I'm now 18, and have been told it'll be even longer. ive been told by psychologists there that i am definately autistic, so what can I do in the meantime to prepare for my assessment? work on unmasking in front of a doctor and explaining your symptoms in a way that makes it sound as if you haven’t self-diagnosed

I found the actual diagnosis pretty stressful and I had a hard time communicating everything to my doctor (I only had one chance to tell them everything they needed to know) which felt like a lot of pressure. So for me, I spent a lot of time writing down literally all of the symptoms and experiences I had that led me to believe I was autistic. So I wrote it down, and it helped me have a way to communicate with them. I tried to tell them as many of the things as I could during the actual meeting and ended up sending them an email of everything else I forgot to mention. I hope that's helpful! Having the information written down was super helpful for me

I'll probably have to wrote this as well, I've always struggled communicating my needs, and writing is how I communicate difficult things with my therapist. I've already had a chance to discuss the main issues it's just the actual formal assessment I'm waiting on, so hopefully it won't be quite as stressful

There not much preparation needed. I was tested using methods definitely meant for kids, but in the end I got the answers I was looking for. It may feel mildly patronizing but it’s not the worst thing.

this is most likely what I will have. My friend had her assessment recently and had the kids tests, bit still got her answers, and I'm used to being patronised as I'm constantly being treated as a child by educators, so as long as I get the answers and support afterwards, I think it'll be ok. Thank youa

So for me, I don't even have the spoons to try and get diagnosed due to how difficult it is for Adult Females to be recognized to be on the spectrum especially when I'm "Socially Masked" very well most of the time. So I just continue my life knowing I'm on the spectrum and having therapists that treat me as such. I hope it goes well for you and you get the diagnosis and it helps you 🙏

they've told me that I should be quite high on the waiting lost given that I was waiting for a long time on the children's list, but I'm not hoping for too much
