Lacking Empathy: What Does It Mean?

Hi! So after a conversation with my bf turns out I lack empathy. I do have sympathy for others but I do lack empathy and I'm just like????? what do I even do about this? I know I'm not a psychopath because my emotions are to all over the place for that but like what does this even mean? It could be autism as that is a possibility I've discussed with my therapist or BPD after doing a little googling but I'm just concerned about how I interact with others. The only good thing I can see that has come from this is that at least it explains a lot of my behaviors in my life.
