7 months without a period, what could be the cause?

I went through long stretches with no period, and when I got periods, they were often really heavy and painful, to the point that I had to get up several times in the night and I couldn't go anywhere. There are some possible explanations. In my case, it turned out that I had cancer in my uterus and needed a total hysterectomy. Before they knew, my doctor had suggested birth control pills. I insisted that first I wanted to know the cause, and that is when they found the cancer. Not saying that's what it is, because there are other explanations, but it might be worth a look.
