Insurance coverage for wheelchairs

Anyone had any luck getting insurance to approve a wheelchair? Were you able to get a good/modern one or did they make you choose from a standard type? Help a spoonie out 🦓

Insurance paid for mine. It was a simple one, but it was custom built to fit my body so it wouldn't add strain. My Dr had to advocate for me for the insurance to cover it, and it was essentially a one shot deal, so if my needs change, I'll have to cover that out of pocket, but I've had my chair for over 10years and it's still in really good shape. I also kept my ears open and got an electric one really cheap from someone who's grandparent passed away and the battery was dead, and they didn't feel like messing with it. I've never used it because the battery is so expensive to replace, but it's nice to know that if I do NEED it, I can pay a few hundred instead of 10k+

I had to get one from donations at a homeless shelter I stayed in. I've had docs tell me I just need to get up and walk.
