so I recently started dha ing jaw pain and I couldn't open my mouth fully, found out its an impacted wisdom tooth. I know this is fairly common, but it scares me senseless bc I know they have to be able to get into my mouth to take it out and I physically can't open my jaw any more than maybe an inch and I'm afraid they'll break another tooth or something trying to force it open. any kind words or similar experiences are welcome. I'm too anxious to think about anything else

So you actually physically could open your mouth, but the muscles surrounding your jaw joints are super powerful and the (very understandable) fear of hurting yourself is enough to make those muscles tense up like crazy. This is called a TMJ disorder, and since it's probably psychosomatic, once the tooth causing you anxiety is removed, the TMJ should go away too. When you have the tooth removed, you'll be sedated, so all your muscles will be relaxed and the surgeon will be able to manipulate your jaw however they need to without damaging anything. Worst case, they screw it up and you're financially set for life š

Oral surgeons, imo, are very skilled. Never had issues with them. Make appts until you meet one that you trust.
