for those who've had a full hysterectomy, what was your recovery like?

Total hysterectomy here. First couple days were awful; I had difficulty waking from anesthesia and urinating, so they kept me at the hospital overnight. but I stayed hydrated and had healthy very light (almost snacking) foods. Mostly fresh fruits, yogurt, oatmeal, lean meats. Took medications as needed for pain (oxycodone and gabapentin). Can't recommend enough, have someone assist you around your home. Feeling my organs shift into an empty space was certainly a feeling, try not to freak out if possible. Because of this, I had to take a gentle laxative around day 3. Slept slightly elevated, a good wedge pillow is suggested. First two weeks was mostly resting, so I did gentle leg exercises, upper body twists when I had the strength. Got some good books, little activities/crafts, caught up on shows and watched comfort movies. If you're getting laparoscopic surgery, something I was not told was shoulder pain - this is from them pumping cO2 into your body to perform the procedure. Rotate your shoulder gently to relieve it. Could not lift above 10 lbs. By week 8 I was given the clear to have penetrative sex, but I chose to wait longer (16 weeks). I had discharge for about 6 weeks, a thin maxi pad was enough.

Recovery from a full hysterectomy can vary from person to person. Some people experience minimal pain and are able to return to work in a few days, while others may take up to 2 months for recovery. It is important to limit movements for a few weeks or more, depending on your own system.
