Hair Loss with Hashimoto's: Any Solutions?

Has anyone experienced hair loss with Hashimoto’s disease? I used to have long thick hair but over the past three years it’s gotten very thin and oily. It falls out in clumps when I wash it. Is there anything I can do to stop this from continuing?

just a heads up to those suggesting biotin supplements - my endocrinologist has advised me that taking those can alter thyroid blood results and can produce inaccurate diagnosis - so please just with your specialist before starting any supplement. I have been told by my hair dresser that rose hip oil used topically can help with some hair thinning. I haven't tried it yet since that is not easily accessible in my area

My mom takes biotin supplements and uses a rice water based conditioner, and dries her hair with a microfiber towel to prevent breakage. If you're not already on thyroid meds, starting them or seeing about a higher dose might be something to ask about because that might be the most effective way to combat the clumps that fall out. But biotin and the rice water conditioner/shampoo helped with thinning and dryness/breakage.

I’m on levothyroxine but I am due to get my levels checked and I’ll be doing that this week. I’ll have to look for that rice water shampoo and conditioner, thanks for the advice!

I know people suggest biotin and it does help some. It actually can mess with the thyroid levels on a blood panel though and can do more harm than good sometimes.

Definitely get your ferritin levels checked. I read that it should be at least 50 for hair growth. My hair was falling out in clumps, but after I started taking Standard Process Ferrofood, it's gotten much better. You can get a prescription from your doctor as well for ferrous sulfate.

I would like to suggest trying the use of biotin to start with, as well as some vitamin e. Biotin is good for your hair skin and nails, and vitamin e is also good for your skin. You also can never go wrong with a tad bit of coconut oil as a leave in to restore dry or damaged hair. 😅😊

Yes. I use to have tons of thick hair. Now it’s kind of thin and falls off a lot. It is depressing to see myself losing my hair.
