Seeking Advice on Getting Mobility Aids Through Insurance

Has anyone talked to their doctor about trying to get mobility aids through their insurance before?? I'm looking to get a walker or something that has a seat for my chronic pain and dizziness. My general doctor is very nice but I had a really dismissive general doctor as a kid and now I feel bad asking for anything or bringing up my issues with my doctor. I'm not sure how to bring it up to her in a way she will believe me. She knows I have chronic pain, it's in my chart, and she knows I get dizzy when I'm too hot/in pain or anything like that but I'm worried she'll tell me I don't need a mobility aid. Does anyone have any tips on how to bring it up and convince them my issues are real?

Hello! I understand how hard it is with medical trauma to bring things up with doctors, even if they seem nice. I would maybe prepare a script for the next time you see them if you want to ask about getting a mobility aid order. I'm sure it'll turn out better than you think! In terms of insurance coverage, unfortunately, many mobility aids are not covered, but if you are looking for something specific (assuming you are in the USA), I would look up the CPT code. This code is what the actual order gets filed under insurance; if the mobility aid is covered, you should be able to find a cpt code for it. Just try searching the internet for "rollator cpt code" or something along those lines. You got this!!!

thank you so much i didn't know anything about the cpt code and stuff like that, i'm gonna look that up and then probably call my insurance or something and see if they think it'll be covered, if not i might end up talking to my doctor anyway because she might to more affordable options! hopefully😭
