Hi,
I suffer from GERD pretty bad. I’ve been dealing with it since 2018. For about 2 months now I’ve had this new frightening symptom as to when I eat and swallow food gets stuck in my throat… it gets stuck in a spot where I can’t breathe until it passes. It’s very scary and has caused me fear of eating and swallowing. I’m afraid I’m going to choke and die. I’m losing weight and I’m sure I’m losing much nutrition. Has anyone dealt with anything like this?

Feeling of choking

Pantoprazole

Omeprazole

Esophagitis-Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Hernia Diaphragmatic

Laryngopharyngeal reflux

Edema and Anasarca

Dysphagia

I have GERD but I have never had this problem. Maybe you should ask your Dr about some meds that would help so you don't get scared to swallow. Sounds scary. :( I wish you the best.

My coworker had that issue for awhile and it ended up being swelling in her throat and benadryl cleared it up. A swallow study with the doctor may also be helpful. I've never had that with Gerd but for the GERD Omeprazole helped me a ton. My doctor prescribed that for 2 months then I switched to pepcid as needed

I had that issue and got an EGD to see what was going on. Got prescribed pantoprazole.

that's what I'm on too. Out of the last, say 100 days, I've only had symptoms 3 times. It's great!

I have this issue and in my case it's a hernia in my esophagus. You should get in touch with your doctor. In the meantime, cut your food into smaller pieces and/or take smaller bites. It's definitely scary and I hope you get answers soon.

They can stretch your esophagus during an endoscopy. That is what they did for me and it helps.

Hello everyone. I wanted to add to this thread that this is a symptom of EOE. Eosinophilic esophagitis, and having bad heartburn/GERD is also a symptom. This is how it started with me and my brother

Not saying this is definitely it, but it is something to be aware of

I take a supplement called Quercetin. It is an all natural supplement that comes in different dosages and forms. I take a 500 mg tablet 1-2 times a day, and I dissolve it in water or juice. It helps with inflation and histamine responses.

Anti-acids don’t help because they alkalize your stomach acid , and what doctors don’t explain to us is that’s not good . Because when you stop the acid production you have more risk for gut bacterias ,you can not process food well, gut disbiosis is promoted. If you do a little of research you will find that acid reflux is not cause for high stomach acid is the opposite. It’s cause by low stomach acid and the first and main cause are because of anti acids. You have to change your diet , is key , but anti acids won’t resolve the issue at all . Besides taking Ppi , find a good quality of digestive enzymes and take them with your food , you hopefully gonna see a huge difference. Enzymes will help your stomach to digest and “cut” the food you eat . Also , you can prepare marshmallow root infusions and drink it between meals and separate from medications at least 1 hour . You can search about marshmallow root and how much it helps with this condition . It helps tons to alíviate reflux , and helps to creat a protective layer in your esophagus and stomach. I never got relief from Anti acids , they helped for some weeks and then nothing works . When I start seeing an inmunonutricion doctor everything changed. I visited different gastro doctor and nobody helped me or gave me solutions more than “you have to live with this, and also , you have to take anti-acids for the rest of your life” , and that’s not true at all. Doctors right know need to be more interesting getting more updates about certain new ways to treat some illnesses. It’s not just about what they learn 30 o 10 years ago , everything has changed and new research’s has being made . So I hope you feel better

There are times where I almost “forget how” to swallow. I’m not sure if it’s related to GERD or not but it’s very stating.

Have you tried drinking Ensure or other protein shakes to help with nutrition? I have drank those when health issues prevented me from eating much, causing me to physically feel bad. Drinking 2 a day in addition to the food I could eat, helped me feel so much better. It’s not a solution to the whole problem, but could help in the short term

I have the same issue, but a swallow study revealed the food wasn't actually stuck, it's either a psychosomatic response or a neurological response because my brain is stupid and bad and I have a degenerative neurological condition lol

Yes, yes, yes Go to a gastroenterologist and see if the esophagus needs stretching or if it is a hernia, etc... Acid reflux causes these.

Definitely try protein shakes. Some of them are so good that even though I have never had this scary issue you are having I drink them. I work at a warehouse type store that sells in bulk (not associated with any other store, not sure I can say the name?) and there are so many different flavors. Also there are collagen powders and such out there that may have some protein and additional nutrition in them. But I would suggest seeing your doc and letting them know what's going on. If you are taking prescription ant-acids make sure you are also taking calcium and vitamin D3. Those ant-acids pull calcium out of your bones and the calcium will help replace that and D3 helps with absorption of calcium.
