Hi! I have a question. How do I know if I have just long-term acid reflux or the actual diagnosis of GERD? My GI doc put me on omeprazole, (literally doing nothing after two weeks), but didnt give me a firm diagnosis yet. I've never had acid reflux problems before (I have had other GI issues), but this has been a new problem for the last two months. I've had daily heartburn on and off all day, consistent sore throats/raw-feeling throat, bad taste in my mouth and unusual bad breath, upset stomach and horrible nausea (especially near the top of my stomach), etc. Ideas?

@north.star ah, that makes sense! My understanding of silent reflux is that it means they did see evidence of GERD (i.e., esophagitis) but you didn’t often feel the physical symptom of acid reflux - but esophagitis/evidence of reflux is usually enough to get you a GERD diagnosis. Regardless, I hope it all gets figured out soon!! Stomach issues can be so debilitating and disheartening :(

I have no clue. I have a Dysautonomia disorder that affects my entire nervous and cardiac system so I might not even have acid reflux or gerd but just have the symptoms

@FS_cookielove I have a dysautonomia condition as well. So hard to tell if its just that or something else

It is usually diagnosed by an upper endoscopy! GERD symptoms overlap a lot with symptoms of other GI diagnoses, but a PPI (like omeprazole) is often diagnosed for GERD and the conditions it can look like (like gastritis)

@VeggieSandwichQueen thank you!! I actually have erosive gastritis which was diagnosed last year, but at the time when I did that endoscopy, there was only evidence of silent reflux. My GI doc now said she wouldn't do a repeat endoscopy
