Dealing with FOMO and Friends Who Don't Understand My Chronic Illness

Hi guys! How do y’all deal with FOMO and having friends shame you for not hanging out? They don’t understand my pain and fatigue because they can’t see it.

Honestly? I just stop being friends with them. My real friends know I have these issues and are careful to keep it in mind. If I cancel they ask if there’s something I’d rather do or if I need anything. If I start having issues while we’re out they help me. In my opinion friends aren’t people that make you feel like you’re missing out 🤷🏻‍♀️. My best friend and I throw a holiday party every year. Peak pain season for me. Our first year we had it about an hour from me and I cancelled last minute and was miserable about it. Now, she makes sure people come to my place and that she helps with cleanup and hosting responsibilities. When I’m okay and she’s having issues I do the same for her

Also I follow a lady on Instagram and Facebook who is all about positivity and motivations! Her name is Ophelia Nichols. Shes so sweet and she knows people struggle so she often live streams her lunches so everyone has someone to eat with. Shes so special and always makes me smile. (Shes on TikTok too, believe she calls herself ShoeLady99)

I have a very understanding family(I am one of the lucky ones) and a very small group of friends that have stood by me. I found the isolation very lonely and aggravating at first but I found dupport groups, therapists, and like minded individuals that I could relate to. I also found a lot of cool podcasts, and virtual activities to help keep me going. Museums do a lot of virtual activities. Try reaching out to your local Library and see what they suggest. I use Hoopla a lot!

My doctor told me not to watch the news and to avoid any conversations about it. Yes, it's important that it's going on in the world but if you can't handle it, don't put yourself through that. I've been doing better since taking this advice.
