Finding Freedom Through Diagnosis

“Diagnoses aren't bad news for people who've struggled with their symptoms before getting diagnosed. They're like finally finding the owner's manual for the glitchy microwave after years of just trying to get it to work by hitting it.” I saw this posted online today and thought it was so accurate. Everyone always seems to think that me getting diagnosed with certain things is what’s bringing it on me like as if not giving it a title just suddenly makes the issue go away or something. I’ve been living with these symptoms for many years, giving it a title doesn’t chain me to this illness it sets me free to heal more effectively.

I'm glad I'm deaf to receive disability money from the Federal Government. My other debilitating condition... doctors can't seem to find what's wrong with me and many others. Sooooooooooooo many people are debilitated by the same thing and yet don't receive disability money. Can't wait for my proper diagnosis then add that disability to my Vocational Rehabilitation case. I'm being made to attend appointments and do things I take forever to do then get accused for being irresponsible when I'm just too damn sluggish.

During my first disability hearing (trying to get benefits) the judge asked me why I had symptoms before I was diagnosed with my illness, and I had to explain to him that diagnosis doesn’t cause symptoms, it just explains why they’re there🙄

this makes me feel fear, i'm coming up on my reconsideration denial here in... whenever they decide to send it, i expected it 3 months ago, so appeal and hearing is next

wow that is insane. I hate that I can see this being something that happens to a lot of people. I’m sorry you had to go through that.

I don’t have words for this. I can’t believe that *you* had to explain this to a judge in charge of your benefits hearing. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I would have lost it.

god. so tired of feeling guilty every time i get excited about new leads. tired of people acting like i'm a hypochondriac because i'm actively interested in test results. tired of my DOCTORS ignoring my diagnoses/again treating me like a hypochondriac when i disclose everything i've got going on. yes i have borderline. yes i was diagnosed by a mental health professional. no you can't just act like i don't have it because i "seem well oriented and pleasant"

I feel this on a spiritual level, I wish more people understood that

I agree! Somehow only people who have these illnesses seem to get it. Unfortunate that empathy is not strong for those more fortunate in that space.

so true. I was always told I was a dramatic kid and stuff like that. Now that I can say I was depressed and anxious my whole childhood I hope they feel bad about saying those things.
