I get this alot. The basis of it, or what it is for me, is dissociation. It's normal with both anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc. The best thing for me was to explain that to the people around me that care about me, they are significantly more understanding, and they start conversations and ask me direct questions to help pull me out of it. Sometimes it works, sometimes I end up stuttering super hard and it's awkward, but if it doesn't, they know to back off and let me breathe and listen to the conversation, because I am still there and still care about it. Usually it takes maybe an hour to really get back into myself. Grounding stuff helps here alot too.
