Fear of Developing Bipolar Disorder

I'm terrified of getting/developing bipolar disorder. No offense to anyone who is bipolar, it's just that my mom is. I've always been scared of becoming her (she's neglectful and abusive). I don't know what conditions my father has, but it seems like I'm loosing the genetic lottery and getting most of the conditions in my family with a few added bonuses.

You can't help your genetics, but you can learn control over your own actions and behaviors. Personally, I recommend Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) because it involves being taught *specific* skills, behaviors, and coping mechanisms. You have the power not to become your mother. I know lovely people with Bipolar Disorder. Your mother isn't bad because of how she was built. Your mother does bad things because she chooses to do them. Sometimes that's harder to accept. No one is made evil or genetically predisposed to become so. Everyone has the power to change. Not everyone chooses to do so. Often, that knowledge hurts more. If you see notice yourself developing unhealthy patterns of behavior or if you just want to jump in and prevent them before anything comes up, see a therapist. Again, I think DBT is most helpful in learning specific concrete skills.
