How do you explain depression to someone that says "just stop being sad" or "be happy"

I think it is different for everyone. Maybe the first step to explaining it is first understanding what it is to you. It's more than lack of hope n joy it's apart of you. It's a living breathing part of you. I've been dealing with my depression for 10 years and I still don't understand it cause it evolves as I do. But most importantly remember no matter what it means to you there will always be people who understand you. We got this!

I think helping to describe that it's not solely just being sad, that there are other symotoms too would help. It's a major misconception that depression is just being sad, but there's way more to it, and understanding that is the key to acceptance that we're unable to "just be happy"

Well when my sil that I no longer speak to told me years ago to just go outside and smell the flowers and everyone has problems after the first time I was inpatient that was my final straw with that whole family. I haven't spoken to any of them in almost 5 years because they all lied to my husband as he was dying. They promised to be here for me and my kids always and as we needed them they didn't want to do anything. I'm still not sure what being here meant to them. My husband has been gone almost 10 years. He was a good man not anything like they turned out to be. I'm not doing so well mentally the past few days and I've been doing good since the middle of 2019 so im glad to find this app and others to relate to.

Next time they complain about something like being hungry “just don’t be hungry”
